In the past couple of years I have become more and more interested in sound for film and have sound-designed several shorts and 2 feature films. These have been low-budget affairs which have meant that I’ve taken responsibility for all stages of the audio post production– dialogue editing, ADR, Foley, Sound effects etc.
My home setup is perfect for tracklaying and prep work. I can open OMFs generated by Avid, Final Cut etc. and have access to many sound effects. I have good relationships with several bigger studios for mixing / laybacks, as well as foley artists etc.
Sound Designer - a definition. This was a term first used by Walter Murch, the legendary film editor and sound-designer of films such as Apocalypse Now and The Conversation. He used it to describe a person who has the overall responsibility for the sound of a film. This could mean getting involved before, during and after shooting takes place. This is the way I use the word. “Sound Design” also tends to be used to refer to the creation of special, often quite abstract, sound effects, sounds which literally have to be “designed”.
